Justice Is So Metal

Bands without creative names shouldn’t be playing music in the first place. The Goo Goo Dolls is not a creative name. Justice is a creative name. In fact, Wikipedia lists only two bands in the world named Justice. One’s a German thrash-metal outfit from the early 90’s, and the other, of which I’m a fan, is a French electro-house duo. I can’t say I know the work of the former, but given their roster included a Wolfgang, an Uli, and at least one Jörg, you can bet that they came with a pretty authentic German sound.

The group Justice, versions French and German.

All this begs the question: Why do so many over-the-top, we-don’t-give-a-fuck musicians hail from France and Germany? Is it because the two wars were so difficult that when they were finally over, people raised the next generation to have more fun? I’m not sure, but I know that the two Justice’s are also connected in another way: the French group borrows from heavy metal in both their music and aesthetic. I never liked metal myself, but there’s something in how these guys do it that’s undeniably cool.
