Classifying music can be tricky business. Sure, we’ve got genres like Rock, Hip-Hop and Booty House, but over the years, these labels have been so stretched and beaten as to tell us little or nothing about what to expect when we press play. In many ways, we’ve outgrown genres because they tell us nothing about how a piece of music connects with our everyday lives. Think Commuter Classical, Dress-Down-Friday Country, and our personal favorite, Brunch Rock.
Brunch Rock makes you feel good. It transports you and your brunch-mates to a headspace that’s so comfortable that it belies traditional meals. When a Brunch Rock song is playing, it weaves imperceptibly between the threads of your conversation. Your peers smile and sway subtly, sometimes with shut eyes and an overbite. While you may not know the song’s lyrics in their entirety, you’ve heard they may be vaguely political. In other words, this isn’t a meal—it’s a bloodless revolution. And our leaders in this struggle for normalcy are bands like Coldplay, Jack Johnson, Counting Crows, David Gray, Coldplay, John Mayer, U2, Wilco, and Coldplay.
With this, Broccoli & Cheese proudly introduces the Brunch Safe open-source music accreditation system. If you’re confident that a song or album will enhance your next brunch and earn the near-silent approval of your guests, affix this label (at left) to its MySpace page, blog about it, or whatever. It’s up to you to make brunch safe again.
Can we get the ad council to round up some bruch rock celebs to do an awareness campaign ala ‘the more you know’ to stress the importance of safety? And would we invite the old guard of the 80s soft rock era, the Cetera’s and Halls and Oateses to stand next to the coldplay’s? They’re brunch safe too, but I’d understand if their inclusion were seen as atavistic and coldplayed.
Good point. Classic Brunch Rock is experiencing a resurgence. Write your congress-person about this, please.
This is an awesome idea. Of course, it should be a microformat. Beyond brunch safe, I’d be interested in the yuppie dinner party safe and hooking up safe track list.
